I saw a production in 2006 at the Cape Playhouse. The first act was a completely joyous experience. I called my partner during intermission to question why it is so rarely done. Then the 2nd act began. The mother is gang raped and the daughter lost in drugs and sex. It was ugly and racially charged and a complete bummer!
I had seen the original and still remember loving Chita and Liza ( who was strong, confident and funny the night I saw her). In my opinion, the swerve into social commentary is not supported or welcomed in what had been an enjoyable musical COMEDY.
