If the creators of "Applause" had the rights to add the Addison DeWitt character, which would have added some spice to the proceedings, George Sanders would have been able to repeat his Oscar-winning role. He had a really beautiful singing voice as displayed in the film version of "Call Me Madam" opposite Ethel Merman. He started as a chorus boy, and was on the verge of replacing Ezio Pinza in "South Pacific" but he got cold feet and changed his mind. There are other recordings of him as well; he had a really lovely voice. He dropped out of "Sherry!", the musical version of "The Man Who Came To Dinner" as well, but I think that was during previews.
