Well.
In Boston at the Colonial.
It aspires to lavish glamour and a nearly-tragic satire on greed, ambition, and materialism, American style. And Ms Chenoweth delivers as expected. She is, as she was as Glinda, a veritable starburst of self-absorption. Such personal confidence in herself and her audience appeal is irresistible. It’s what we all, sitting out here in the dark, wish we had.

The script takes some serious turns that Ms Chenoweth’s talents aren’t suited for. At least not yet. And the script is still a kind of sketch for the storyline, which is a bit of a descent into the hell of shallowness. With not much humor or any insightful political commentary on the financial collapse it references.

Her supporting players, including the underused F Murray Abraham, are fine.

SPOILER:
One lyric rhymes despot with respite, which actually works, charmingly.
PS: If I were John Simon, I’d point out that there is a tall actress in the ensemble who dresses as Marie Antoinette who sings, parades about in tableaux, and looks beautifully. Beauty still makes its mark in the theatre.
