Looks like the last time the Kennedy Center Honors really celebrated theater was 2018, when they named the creators of ''Hamilton.''
Besides theater, none of this year's honorees are known primarily for their work in dance or classical music.
It's tricky to pick a balanced mix of honorees that reflect the diversity of the disciplines, historic importance, race and sex from such a talented pool.
I imagine, too, that CBS would be happier if the honorees were famous enough to draw a broad audience among the home viewers.
At least, none of these 5 just happen to star on CBS, which airs the Honors, like past recipients LL Cool J (''NCIS: L.A.'') or Queen Latifah (''The Equalizer''). |
