The score of the current version seems to assume we already know the original version and plays off that.
Funny. It's hardly the first show to be musically rearranged when revived - sometimes drastically. Though off the top of my head I can't think of any "revisal" scores I'm all that fond of. Many I have a real dislike for. One of the few I can think of that I respect is the Lupone version of Anything Goes, but mainly because they made an attempt to restore all the material that was cut/changed for the 1962 off-Broadway version. But also the arrangements are tasteful.
Ironically, I may be one of the few people who liked the new take on 1776, though it doesn't at all replace the original for me. |
