I flew to Chicago from NYC to see it and wish I hadn’t. I loved Hunter’s Case for the Existence of God, and saw it multiple times. This feels half baked in comparison. Metcalf is superb, as usual, but Micah Stock gives the most annoying lead performance I’ve seen in quite some time, braying all of his lines at 160% the volume of the other actors, and chewing scenery when subtlety is essential for a quiet piece like this. It feels like Hunter is coasting on old terrain rather than advancing. The revolving sofa was pretentious and ineffective, as if the oft-estimable Mantello were also on auto-pilot. All this said, I’d maybe give it a second chance if Stock was replaced in an NY production.
