| This is devastating. The Beechman has felt like a home to me in NYC - for a number of years each November, I've had the pleasure of accompanying the Emerson College musical theatre BFA's (and acting BFA's) showcase there, months after their graduation. The Beechman staff has always been very gracious to us, and although it's been a challenge in that cramped space, it's always been a joy to perform there. My colleague who directs the showcase always talks about having performed there when he was younger. So this will be so sad for him too. I know we'll just carry on with a new space, but it won't feel the same. To add to that, reading in "Putting It Together" that Patinkin learned "Finishing The Hat" at the Beechman the day the song went into the show adds to the wonderful history of the venue. I've told the story about that song to the last few MT graduating classes - "the cabaret you'll be performing in is where Mandy rehearsed that song" - it will be sad to lose that. A few years ago the venue was in danger of shutting down and I contributed to the fund to keep it open. As sad as i am to lose it now, I feel proud that so many of us were able to band together to keep it open longer than it might have been. |
