A friend of mine, a marvelous lyricist-writer, saw this thread and heard from Bruce Kimmel, who forwarded by e-mail a copy of this letter below that Ira Levin received from Sondheim. Kimmel also mentioned he had tried to get Encores and some other companies to put on "Drat! The Cat!", but to no avail. Apparently they wouldn't even read it.

I was given permission to post from Bruce Kimmel:

"I tried to get Encores to do it over and over and over again - they wouldn't even read the damn thing. I tried to get Reprise in LA to do it - same thing. I tried to get Musical Theater Guild to at least do a one-nighter concert - nope. I promised Ira I would do this and I will. As to the orchestrations - yes, they're lost, yes, I had them recreated from the piano/conductor scores (and boy did they do a great job), and I own those orchestrations."

....

I sent Steve the CD of Drat - he wrote me a lovely note about it, but more importantly, he wrote Ira. Here is that note."

Ok,link isn't working but here's the text on letterhead of Stephen Sondheim:

March 27, 1998

Dear Ira -

Over the weekend, I listened to the new recording of Drat! The Cat
and was reminded all over again at how expert and charming your lyrics
are. I really think this is one for the Encores! series.

I salute you.

As ever,

(signed) Steve

This is me (PlayWiz): Thanks very much to my friend and to Bruce Kimmel! Really appreciate your input. Hopefully more people will start talking about doing a revival of this show again!
