Well, Joey Heatherton was considered a very good dancer as well, as there's a production number she did on, I believe, "The Ed Sullivan Show" which was choreographed by Michael Bennett, and she did nightclubs as a singer as well. Yes, she was pretty hot back in the day, too. My family and I once saw her as an opening act for someone (maybe Engelbert Humperdinck?) out at Westbury Music Fair. Sexy and talented though after a while, with an emphasis on the former, as Lola might sing, in her gigs. Alice is supposed to be a debutante, and Bob is very green in his job as a policeman, carrying on after his father dies. Lesley Ann Warren's role in "100 Degrees in the Shade" sounds like, at least from her main number of "LIttle Red Hat" on the recording, to be kind of sex kittenish, which might have led to her getting the lead as Alice. But interesting that the critics were apparently drooling over her.

I think someone in her 20s or maybe even 30s who reads younger on stage could probably play Alice, and a guy into his 30s or so who reads younger on stage could make a convincingly klutzy and lovable Bob. And with well-known names, people make allowances for even older -- come on, Mary Martin as Peter Pan/Maria Von Trapp, Sutton Foster as Winnifred recently, etc.
