At the same time, I don't think that a mature discussion about the messages in the musical Assassins should be taboo. The fact is, nowhere in the musical do Sondheim or Weidman claim the story of assassination in America is "complete." Take Weidman's brilliantly-written scene where Booth and the other assassins try to convince Oswald that his act will "blow it all wide open" (which was true, of course, and essentially still is). But later assassination attempts and tragedies beyond that are also represented in the show, which suggests the idea that assassination would and will continue, even after the huge world shock that was the JFK assassination. JFK's death may have been "the big one," but it was certainly not the last one. And yes, although the show largely deals with presidents in office, there are also references to Wallace, RFK, and MLK in that scene. Also, of course, the fact of the closing number, the reprise of "Everybody's Got The Right," insinuates that this terrible history will continue. The assassins have the last word onstage, and they'll be back. Fact. So, yes, of course the OP's wrongheaded desire for the show to be "completed" may be just a way to bring up the musical in light of yesterday's events. But it's also healthy to take a good look at the show and see what it really says. There are still people singing that other national anthem, unable to get into the ballpark, and something continues to just break. (And notice that Sondheim didn't have to write anything about bump stocks and yet "Gun Song" is still frighteningly real in our current day.) It's a tragic and shameful history that is not in any way complete. And the fact that the subject itself has been musicalized cannot and should not make the reality any less horrid. |
