Musical film fans know Russ Tamblyn for his terrific Riff in ''West Side Story'' (1961). And he's featured in Michael Kidd's athletic, barn-raising dance in ''Seven Brides for Seven Brothers'' (1954). But who knew Tamblyn had another kickass barn dance in ''The Fastest Gun Alive'' (1956)?

Turner Classic Movies just posted this clip of his ''Shovel Dance,'' and I don't know why I've never seen or heard of it, but it's a knockout.

Did Tamblyn do the dazzling choreography, too? IMDB lists Andre Previn as the film's composer. ... Glenn Ford tried to get this dance cut, but luckily failed.

I've never seen this 1956 Western, but one of the writers was Frank D. Gilroy, who later penned the Tony- and Pulitzer-winning ''The Subject Was Roses.''
