I've never heard anything about Midler's ''Hello, Dolly!'' being filmed, other than being shot for the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive. Anyone?

The Tony dispute was ridiculous. Scott Rudin was insistent that Midler could only perform from the ''Hello, Dolly!'' stage at the Shubert, and the Tonys were equally insistent about her performing live at the Tonys. For the record, other Dollys have performed at the Tony telecasts.

Pearl Bailey did ''So Long, Dearie'' at the 1968 Tonys. Carol Channing did ''Before the Parade Passes By'' at the 1971 Tonys.

Even so, at the end of the day, I wish the Tonys had made an exception. Instead, home viewers never got a glimpse of the historic and acclaimed performance that Bette won her Tony for, and instead we got David Hyde Pierce doing the inconsequential cutout song ''Penny in My Pocket.''

Historically, the Tony telecasts have been time capsules of their seasons. It's still crazy the Tonys willingly waved ''So long'' to Bette's performing.
