Now that we're all agreed (yes, my tongue is in my cheek) that HERE WE ARE is the greatest new musical written in the last ten years and light years ahead of most other musicals ever ....

Seriously, the details are exquisite. I cite, among many, one: that beautiful moment of reflection in The Soldier's Dream after the train passes through, when the bizarre becomes, just for a few moments, the most wonderful touching moment of a deeply felt love. The entire song-scene is a masterwork. Sondheim used to say a song is like a play, but this one even has its own play-within-a-play.

You know, I often say (to people who humor me as they make a call for the men in white coats!) that if we knew nothing else of Shakespeare's career apart from the scene in which Hamlet contemplates killing Claudius as Claudius prays, but decides against it because a praying Claudius is a Claudius who may go to Heaven when the vengeful Hamlet wants him to go to hell, and then leaves and then Claudius comes out of his prayer and declares it has failed; I say, if we knew nothing of Shakespeare but that perfectly written vignette; as if it had somehow survived the mashing up of all his other manuscripts and floated in off the beach, the only single piece of the master's genius in evidence, we would know we were dealing with a theatrical force of peerless, prodigious ability.

I believe the same is true of The Soldier's Dream.

But alongside it we have the unique Waiter's Song, also "It Is What It Is", "Shine" ... the adorable charm song "Marianne"...and so on.

Yes, I think we can all agree that....
