The original London production was set on a moving chess board and backed by a wall of several dozen tv monitors.

Bennett's vision of the show was to put mass media front and center and illustrate how it would often mislead, manipulate and change the course of action (this would obviously be the subtext as the key story was already there). His idea for the set was to make it auto-generated and high tech but otherwise minimal. It was also being developed while he was growing increasingly ill and, according to books/articles, still suffering from substance abuse. According to the NYT he was also anticipating more material to be added/written but I don't think that transpired.

When Trevor Nunn took over as director, he scrapped the media angle/subtext that Bennett had in mind and kept the set but added set pieces that came on/off and give it a more realistic look than the sparse, hi-tech vibe Bennett had been aiming for.

When the Shuberts took the show to Bway, Nunn came with the production but with an entirely new design, a heavily rewritten book and a revised score with a new song and a handful of other songs elimated (though the show ran close to three hours in typical Trevor Nunn fashion).

The show is now back in development (according to Broadway Briefing) and I look forward to its hopeful return to Broadway.
