My understanding is that this wasn't Corden's sole decision, but was made in conjunction with house management and stage management and the other two cast members (who joined Corden with the audience to watch the end of the match).

The headlines seem to want to portray this as Corden making a decision by fiat because HE wanted to see the end of the match and that seems not to be reality here. Not sure why the media is so eager to portray him in such a negative light.
