The film was indeed a flop but I can't see how it a) "ruined" the musical for you; the show is the show and stands on its own, or b) what its failure had to do with the failure of a local stage production. The Broadway show was long gone when the film came out, and the film was, I presume, long gone when the local revival was mounted. It's got a beautiful but unconventional score and story, making Rob Marshall's film unlikely to appeal to a broad audience, even with its star-packed cast. (For the record, I liked the film and wrote as much in my Bloomberg News review, and while I was virtually alone among my American colleagues, the UK reviews were more in tune with mine.)
