Respectfully, you're not the only one who lived through the 80's. I officially came out in 1981, my last year in high school, to boot. And then I found myself entering a world where sex - particularly sex between men - could kill. So you don't need to tell ME.
And whenever any of my musical theatre college students work on AIDS-related songs such as "You Gotta Die Sometime," I give my little "you don't know how scary it was back then" lecture. Because really they have no idea what it was like, especially before we knew what the virus really was. (Though I find now that I don't need to explain it as much, because they all dealt with the pandemic, with its fears and politics as well. Not the same but similar.)
