The "SORRY!" written on the package makes it even weirder, since she presumably didn't write that as she was handing over the package. She knew she should have given it to him earlier.
Maybe she was a big Sondheim fan also, and just wanted to hold onto the package he sent for just a little bit. Or there was a news story several years later about a hoarding mail center employee who had thousands of packages.
On an unrelated note, it was very thoughtful of Sondheim to send it to his college rather than to his parents' address. |
