I too could afford to see A Moon for the Misbegotten, Pacific Overtures, Merrily We Roll Along, and Sweeney Todd.

Granted, I was still living at home and had limited expenses, but I was also only making $1.75/hr as a part-time cashier while I was in college. Rush tickets were $3.50 at the Mercer Arts, where I saw the amazing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. But even full-price tix on Broadway were accessible, with a little careful budgeting and setting of priorities (I was not well-dressed!). Six or seven hours at minimum wage--or less--was enough to pay for a decent seat.

Now it would take more like 20 hours, and that's only for regular shows. For Cabaret, Gypsy, etc, it would eat up a whole week's pay.

But while this is a theatre board, and therefore we focus on theatre, I find it only fair to mention that I remember 10-cent bagels and now they're $1.75 and up. Everything is insanely expensive, particularly in NYC, and theatre producers are just business people after all.

And, while it's incredibly sad that Broadway has become so out of reach for so many people (me included, often!), there are still off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway, regional theatre, and theatre on TV, which has gotten quite good over the years.
