Lovely performance. Apparently evolved since the Thurs show.

Ruthie Ann Miles stole the show. Cynthia Erivo is a true star—gorgeous voice and great actress. She got tripped up on her’s Miller’s Wife song so asked the orchestra to stop so she could redo the part. The tempos were still strangely slow—some conductors get overindulgent and that seems to be the case here too.

The new orchestrations were nice but didn’t seem necessary. I’m guessing Tunick always wanted to go a fuller orchestration, so it was a labor of love.
(And thus the slow tempos).

Overall, though it was nice, the whole event came across as rather superfluous. I guess I was expecting some sort of revelation. When the N.Y. Times asks where this show belongs, the answer is on a Bway stage, not the opera house. It’s not opera. It’s not even operetta. It’s a Broadway show with operetta-like music.
