Two River Theater has quietly become one of the most reliably consistent regional theaters in the country over the past decade or so. I would argue that they are never better than when staging the plays of August Wilson. Their production of Jitney was the basis for the Broadway revival which ultimately won the Tony. Their Ma Rainey (starring Brandon Dirden and directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson) is the best I've ever seen. Gem of the Ocean is fantastically realized - a stirring production of one of Wilson's trickier works. I'd recommend it to anyone who can get to Red Bank this weekend.

The company also produced an excellent Trouble in Mind long before Alice Childress was "rediscovered" by more prominent theaters. I also saw new Broadway darling Cole Escola play Roland Maule in Present Laughter there more than a decade ago. The company really came into its own under the decade-long artistic directorship of John Dias, and his successor Justin Waldman seems to be forging ahead in the same vein.

As mentioned, Red Bank is incredibly convenient if you are coming from NYC. The train station is a stone's throw from the theater. The Two River complex also has ample free, on-site parking for those who drive. Red Bank is a cute town with lots of nice restaurants (my partner and I especially like Semolina), and is very walkable if you want to arrive early and make a day of it.
