(New York, NY) - The world premiere of Coney Island Nursery Rhyme, a new historical drama about the unofficial father of Neonatology, Martin A. Couney, is set for a strictly limited engagement run Off Broadway this summer. Written and directed by Lubomir Rzepka, the production will run July 12th -20th in the John DeSotelle Studio at the NuBox Theatre, 754 Ninth Ave., 4th floor. Tickets are $30 and available at Eventbrite.

Coney Island Nursery Rhyme is a historical fiction set in Connecticut and New York in the 1930's. Based on a true story, it follows the esteemed incubator-doctor, showman, and unofficial father of Neonatology, Martin A. Couney. In a time where a eugenics-focused medical culture refused to employ incubator technology, Couney took it upon himself to save premature babies in his own incubators at a sideshow at Coney Island where funds were used to hire nurses and essentially create an unofficial hospital. We focus on Beatrice Winthrop, a woman from the American gentry who seeks Couney's assistance after giving birth prematurely.

The story is an homage to an important, peculiar, and nearly forgotten part of history. It is a reflection on the nature of truth and trust, and perhaps most importantly, it is a meditation on what it means to "do the right thing" and how doing the right thing isn't entirely free of consequence.

"I read Dawn Raffel's incredible account of the life of Martin A. Couney during the heat of the pandemic and what stunned me most was how this was one of the only texts written about the incubator-doctor," says playwright Lubomir Rzepka. "Spurred by the lockdown, the virus, and the new technology we had developed to face it, I was convinced the history of Couney's marvelous and peculiar treatments made for a story that had to be told on stage — and this was just the right time to tell it."

The cast of Coney Island Nursery Rhyme features Mike Timoney, Zachary Speigel, Jessica Noboa, Phyllis Lindy, Pete Marzilli, and Judge Boothby. Set design is by Amanda Adams, and lightning design is by Refilwe Kekana.

The show runs approximately 90 minutes and also has a 10-minute intermission.

Lubomir Rzepka is a 25 year old writer and musician living in Brooklyn, New York. "Coney Island Nursery Rhyme" is not only Lubomir's directorial debut but also his first written work to be produced on the stage. When not working on theatrical projects Lubomir writes and performs music with his band under the moniker Bleak March.
