I come from a different vantage point because I really did fall in love with the original cast recording when it came out. And I'm fine with the "Growing Up" segments written for the revisal. But I agree that the verse to "Good Thing Going" that we hear Gussie sing in the revisal (her number, of course, wasn't there in 1981) isn't Sondheim at his best, with it's "ok, the moon is cheese" stuff. I also don't think it was Sondheim trying to make Charley a bad lyricist, given the dexterity of "Bobby And Jackie And Jack" and the solid lyric that is the refrain of "Good Thing Going."

If there's one thing that were allowed to be cut from the current score, for me it would be that Act II opener. But I guess in the reassessment of the show, they felt it was important to show Gussie the Star. Ultimately, it might have been better for her to just sing the refrain of "Good Thing Going" (which we'll then hear Charley sing a few scenes later in his own rendition) than to have added that, um, cheesy verse.
