Not just the material, though

I was also struck by how few women there were at the show (and how long the bathroom line was before the show -- women, I know you're saying, "Yeah, that's what it's like for us EVERY SINGLE TIME"). As we know, more women than men in general go to the theater. According to the Broadway League, 2/3 of Broadway theatergoers are women, and I think it's an even higher proportion for national tours. The only other times I remember going to a show where there were so many more men than women were Angels in America and The Inheritance.

But I really don't remember this being true for the Broadway revival at the Marquis or at the Encores Follies, and I think I would have noticed if it had been the case. Has anyone noticed this for Follies in the past? So I think some of it is the material, but some of it is something else. Has that been true for the prior Transport Group concerts?

I wonder if part of it is having had to jump on tickets immediately. I'm wildly speculating, but I'm wondering if it's because a lot of gay men are used to either going to the theater by themselves or with their spouse/partner, while a lot of women will go with a group of friends, which is harder to coordinate so quickly, especially on a weekday. (Obviously, a lot of exceptions to what I just said.) Another possible factor that Zelgo mentioned is that you had to be a pretty hard-core theatergoer to buy tickets based on the names attached (who are Broadway names, not household names) and the material, and I wonder if hard-core musical theatergoers are disproportionately gay men.
