As a new kid in NYC, I saw the original FOLLIES about 20 times. I knew I would never see anything like it again and I haven't. I dated people in the show, worked with people who wrote it or were in it and I became part of the Broadway community. Going to FOLLIES so many times (I could stage probably all of it with the original blocking) made me believe I'd taken the right road in life. It was what I thought theatre was supposed to be--beautiful, challenging, complex, glorious. I have seen many productions and concerts since, but I've never felt at as home as I did at the Winter Garden with that show. The seats were very empty. The ushers let me sit where I wanted. I would go in through the stage door and see it from backstage. It wasn't because I was a gay man that I loved FOLLIES. I was because (mainly because of the work of Michael and Stephen plus that amazing cast) that I felt I was seeing what I thought theatre was supposed to be. It was truly breathtaking and changed my life.
