Hey, EvFoDr. They recorded the dress rehearsal, which Thomas Z. Shepard discusses on pages 331-332 of the revised Sondheim & Co. He said that he wanted to get all the numbers without applause and also the orchestral intros without dialogue lead-ins. He wasn't planning to use applause on the album, but then he changed his mind and decided to include the applause on the performance numbers but mostly not on the expository (his word) songs. He said it was a good thing he recorded the dress rehearsal because a lot of it ended up on the released album. So I guess Montevecchi managed to get it right at the dress rehearsal, or perhaps she had the words with her, at least for one take.

RCA probably would not have paid for studio touch-ups as they tried to cancel the recording because they were sure it wouldn't sell well.
