Sutherland as a Canadian was able to move to Britain in the early sixties and trained there. He had studied at LAMDA (unhappily by report) and worked at the Perth Theater in repertory. He got a break being cast in multiple roles in "Spoon River Anthology" which played at the Royal Court in London. He was noticed by another expatriate American Warren Kiefer (a lifelong friend who he named his son after) who was directing a low-budget horror movie in Italy "The Castle of the Living Dead" which provided a movie debut for Sutherland who played a doltish police inspector and an ugly old witch in the movie.
