Although it did not start as a novel, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Pygmalion and My Fair Lady. A hugely successful play, a hugely successful movie (and the year before the movie we all know, there were German and Dutch film versions, the latter of which can be seen on youtube), a hugely successful stage musical, and a hugely successful film of that stage musical.
