First of all, she was a producer. She wasn't just at the whim of what the people in charge came up with, she was in on it. They tailor the opening number around her, and the material around what the host can do.
Perhaps a different host with more fitting strengths for hosting an awards show would have yielded different material that you'd find better, or less poor.
But the opening number I have to assume she was very involved with (didn't she choreograph it too?), and it was written by Tom Kitt and Amanda Green. I'm sure DeBose had a big hand in what it would be about, and how it would work musically.
Also, by the 3rd time you're hosting, especially being a Producer on the show, anyone would just naturally bear more responsibility for what worked or didn't, you didn't HAVE to host it for a 3rd time if you weren't happy with the team, or the pressure or the response to the 2nd time you hosted! |
