Yes, Anna May Wong is considered the first Chinese-American film star in Hollywood. She did silent films in the 1920s, like ''The Toll of the Sea'' and ''The Thief of Baghdad.'' In the 1930s, she transitioned into sound, and is probably best-known for co-starring with Marlene Dietrich in ''Shanghai Express.'' The big heartbreak of her career was being passed over for the plum role of O-Lan, the Chinese peasant in MGM's movie of Pearl S. Buck's ''The Good Earth.'' Instead, it went to Luise Rainer, a German-born actress who played it in ''yellow face'' and won the Oscar for it. Wong was supposed to make a comeback in the film version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's ''Flower Drum Song,'' but sadly died before shooting began. Happily, there's been resurgence in her career of late: Michelle Krusiec played Wong in ''Hollywood,'' Ryan Murphy's miniseries for Netflix. And in 2022, the U.S. Mint put out quarters featuring her face.
