It is notable that almost all of the books are puzzle/game books, or related to his musicals. Perhaps ones that meant more to him were kept out of the auction, but the absence of a lot of serious reading goes along with your saying that he wasn't much of a reader.

I wonder how hyped up the prices are going to be. I think we'll get a sense of that pretty quickly. Lot 27 is a "milking stool" together with a "joined stool." They were very small (14.5 inches high) and in pretty bad condition. I don't know if you'd get ten bucks for each of them at a garage sale. The estimate is $150 - $250, so maybe there's something about them that's special that I don't know, but if they go for $500 or more, I might as well stop watching because the prices will be too crazy.

I'm actually very interested in the puzzle/game side of things, and my hope is that won't be true for most of the bidders. I actually first knew about Sondheim from The Last of Sheila, which was one of my father's favorite movies and I watched it with him many times. I went to a CD signing for I think the revival of A Little Night Music, and when it was my turn, I asked Sondheim about his experience making The Last of Sheila. He was a bit thrown -- I got the sense that wasn't a question he gets asked a lot. He started to give what seemed like it might be a long answer, but the line was moving and he cut it short. I wish I had written to him later and asked him more about it.
