As someone who quietly does think she will *not* be vocally right for the role... that's the one part I'm hesitant about. That said, she's one of the best ever, Wolfe is one of the best ever, and I trust they can figure it out. And maybe I'll end up still thinking she wasn't vocally ideal for it even after I see it. I'm even more excited for Wolfe's production and Audra's acting the role than I am about her singing it. Rose has never been a role I was itching to hear her voice tackle.

I hope no one out there is misinterpreting discussion of Audra's amazing classical soprano as a good or not good fit for a famous role written around (and usually performed by) a very different vocal type, as a racial issue. We can't ignore racism that may be coming out in reactions to this casting, and we also can't assume it's racism when someone raises a concern or has an opinion about it that isn't just "yay this is perfect, finally!" I also think we can discuss Gypsy in a historical sense and as a musical, regardless of being racist, and also it can be or will be true that some of it would be rooted in racism. No question Wolfe and Audra have discussed at great length whether or not to, and how they would/want to utilize or disregard the skin color of the cast, the skin color of the real people the show is technically based on, and the circumstances politically and culturally of the time and places this show is written to take place in (as well, perhaps, as the culture and politics of when they're presenting this production).

I think Audra will surely give a brilliant performance to see, whether or not her classical soprano works for or against the role, or neither, or both! And it'll surely be an beautifully and intelligently directed production worth seeing whether they make alterations to re-set it and/or utilize the race of the cast or do it as always done in a statement of a "color-blind" approach.
