That was the title out of town, where June was Claire (at least at first), and it says that on the cast recording. I think the reason it says that on the cast recording is very likely because the jacket was printed prior to the Broadway opening. And it was kept when the collage cover replaced the original cover. But if you look at playbills during the original Broadway run, you don't see "a musical fable," you see "a new musical." The national tour playbills said "a new musical." For some reason, the second national tour did say "a musical fable."

Anyway, I think the reason it originally said "a musical fable" was because of June Havoc's legal threats.

The Lansbury production did say "a musical fable," but I think none of the subsequent Broadway revivals did. The published script did not say "a musical fable."
