I think with George C. Wolfe at the helm, this production of Gypsy can accomplish both visibility and the possibility for the roles to be refashioned in a performers image if they so choose. Gypsy has a near perfect book and with some subtle changes can easily bring race (or even gender) in to the vision or not. Audra McDonald is not the first black actress to play Rose and she won't be the last. I know I'm putting the cart before the horse, but wouldn't it be beautiful and fantastic for this Gypsy to run a very long time with rotating actors of different races and genders? Off the top of my head, I'd love to see Lea Salonga, Sara Ramirez or Jinkx Monsoon play Rose.

Take care,
Jason
