Another point - Sondheim's working title of the song was "Meanwhile," and I've always wondered why he changed that.
Fredrik wants sex with Anne "now" but laments that he can't get it, no matter how efficiently he plots it out.
Henrik laments that everything in his life, including sex, seems it's being brushed off until "later."
Anne, still wary of consummating her odd marriage to a "dear" but "old" man, puts everything off to a comfortable distance of "soon."
Only Petra seems to understand that you really have to get it while you can, "in the meanwhile," before you have to face the end of that "very short road" to settle down to realities like marriage and motherhood. (Maybe a little echo of Bobby here - who doesn't want to face "adult" commitment yet either?) |
