| I am much more interested in seeing Landau's production. Her off-broadway premiere of it, it being the brilliant musical she wrote with Adam, did not run very long ... in fact, it ran only 6 weeks, off-broadway at Playwrights Horizons, nearly 30 years ago. I think it's safe to say that relatively speaking "no one" saw her production - this is not like James Lapine directing the first broadway revival of Into the Woods. Most people, even fans of the show, have not seen a production of it. I don't blame her at all for wanting the first production on Broadway, in the age of social media too, etc, to be hers. Also... unlike, say, Lapine, Landau has not had a notable career directing *on Broadway*. She's directed 3 short-lived Broadway productions in the last 23 years since her rather unremarkable bway debut directing the revival of Bells Are Ringing. Frankly, while Christina Sajous may be an amazing director, I don't know, she is by and large mainly a performer, whose directing credits seem to mainly be a national tour of an Aretha Franklin tribute concert experience, and Associate Directing two regional theater productions of jukebox/pop musicals (A Wonderful World and American Idiot). Great credits, but I am a bit baffled how she got positioned to be the director of the supposed first NYC revival of Floyd Collins in NYC off-broadway, and I'm quite a bit more interested in seeing the Landau LCT Broadway production than whatever Out of the Box was going to produce. She was a performer in Landau's production of Spondebob, perhaps she got her blessing even. I dunno. Might have been amazing. And maybe we'll get to see hers another time. Maybe when she's had more experience directing plays or musicals that are not concerts of pop songs her working with another director Also worth noting that the show was also slightly revised since Playwrights Horizons (I don't think for the better), so I imagine Landau also wants a crack with that, and any other revising she and Adam may be doing now. |
