Tamara opened in NYC in 1987 and closed in 1992. Sleep No More opened in 2011. Tamara is an award winning play, and five years at the Park Avenue Armory and 9 in LA is not anything obscure. The opening cast at the Armory included major Canadian stars. I am not attempt to denigrate Sleep No More and its enormous success. Obviously, as well, Sleep No More did extend what immersive could do. But it began with Tamara unless you look to middle ages and passion plays.
