I consider the Tony Awards to be the archive of Broadway's most iconic performances, or it should be. Past Tonycasts salute highlights of that season. So I was really ticked off that Bette Midler, the Tony WINNER for Best Actress of a Musical (2017), didn't perform at that year's telecast. It was one of the season's biggest hits, and Midler should've been seen nationwide doing one of its iconic classics: ''Before the Parade Passes By'' or the title tune. I still can't believe the show and the Tonys couldn't work out a compromise to get Midler on the broadcast. When theater fans go back to rewatch the 2017 Tony Awards, they'll find ''Hello, Dolly!'' is represented by David Hyde Pierce singing ''Penny in My Pocket,'' a former minor, cutout song for Horace. Sheesh!

Finally, ban medleys/mashups, where musicals cram multiple songs, at the Tonys. Do 1 complete number, as it's done in the show, from start to finish.
