Trying to get from Broadway to the outer boroughs by subway after 9:00 or on weekends is frustrating and challenging, what with all the track work. I’m less worried about crime in the subway than I am about routing changes, which, I know, the MTA posts in advance. But I’ve still run into last minute route changes. What is normally a 25 minute trip can take an hour. Definitely a deterrent for me. If it’s a show I have to see, I’ll take the LIRR or an express bus. But both of those options are more expensive and not always reliable either. Buses are constantly rerouted for parades and street fairs, and the walk from Penn to the theater district is seedy and just plain disgusting; I try to use Grand Central, but trains are less frequent. If it’s a show I have only a casual interest in seeing, the hassle of transportation isn’t worth it.
