It's essentially a perfect show. The only issue, with any production, is the strip sequence, as what's in the score is not what's traditionally performed. I don't know where the Broadway productions get the rewrites from, but somehow it's a privileged thing under lock and key for everyone else.
But no - please god no - don't cut anything, don't add anything. period. And none of this "get yourself some new orchestrations" bullshit that too many revivals of shows wind up doing. I'm fine with the color-conscious casting, but otherwise, let Gypsy just be Gypsy. |
