I'll provide a dissenting opinion and say the production disappointed me.

Trying not to spoil anything, but I thought much of the plotting was filled with cliched situations and with nothing new to say about them. There was very little evocative texture onstage of that specific part of touristy Blackpool, England in the 50s or the 70s. A huge clunky set lacking truthful details and costuming that belies the heat everyone talks about constantly.

I can't say for sure if my issues were more about the acting or the (mis)casting, but I never believed the older sisters were related to each other or raised in the same household. In the flashbacks the four teenaged daughters all seemed to be the same age and then the eldest girl who is plucked out for "stardom" (or for even more nefarious purposes) didn't stand out enough from her siblings to support the plot machinations and needed tension. The male characters were all underwritten or clownish cliches. I felt Laura Donnelly, the actress who played the mother (who is Butterworth's wife or partner) was too small, physically and metaphorically, to dominate her scenes. I wanted a much bigger performance. I won't say anything about the inevitable homecoming scene in the final act but, again - just filled with cliches from American 70s movies.

But with all that, I was still engrossed watching it unfold for most of the near 3 hours and only felt disillusioned when it ended and found myself with more questions than answers. I just didn't find it all to quite add up.
