Yes... sorry, but
A) None of us naysayers were doubting that he has fans or that he could sell a weekend or even a week, in fact many were making the argument that it would be both better for his optics and less out-of-touch-with-reality for him to do that and sell out
B) He didn't sell out this first week, did he? (I'm not saying he needs to sell out entirely to be impressive, but of course one could guess if he doesn't sell out 18 shows, then he might have actually sold out 6). So he sold VERY well, which is very impressive and only slightly surprising. The real surprise would be if his entire 3 weeks sold this well.
B) It's only week one, he's only 1/3 of the way done with this residency. I suspect unless he has a lot of returning fans who came this week, it will be tough to sell the next *twelve* shows this well.

But also, what do I or any of us know. This isn't just about Ben Platt and the cloud of his incredibly privileged background and his incredibly rich and powerful entertainment producer father helping his career and this residency happen... no one can deny he's also very talented. I think the skeptics about a singer at his moderate level of singer-success and sales and fanbase and lack of hit songs, myself included in those skeptics, would be singing that same skeptical tune about any singer with the same specs booking a THREE WEEK residency at all, let alone to re-open the Palace!

Anyway, I wish him well, I hope the people who want to see him do this concert get to see him do it. And even moreso I hope each night showcases cool guest singers.

And yes, if his biggest obstacle is to "prove em all wrong", well, he's got the instrument to do that. If his big adversity is not being given the benefit of the doubt, or having to shut up the skeptics who seem to root against him primarily because of his incredible advantages in life and in this industry... well... I'll save my pity for someone else. This isn't like Countess Luanne trying to be taken seriously as a performer. He has an amazing voice. He's extremely talented. He can easily "prove em wrong". He'll be fine. He'll be fine, as will his career, whether his next 2 weeks at the Palace sell amazingly well or not.

I'd also like to mention that ticket prices for his show are, what I'd call, way too high. He's selling both "limited legroom" and "obstructed view" tickets in the mezz for total $149 (with the fee). Yes there are also much cheaper seats, but the cheapest is the balcony at $59...
Especially with such a young fan base, i think he'd do well to lower every ticket by $20 at least, especially to fill up that balcony with young adoring fans from DEH and Summer Camp and Pitch Perfect... who will then pay $120 to see him in 5 years.
