I don't believe it's been explicitly reported why Jenner left or was dropped. Jenner had starred in Linklater's comedy ''Everybody Wants Some!!'' (2016), and Linklater had announced in 2019 that Jenner would star in his film version of ''Merrily,'' so clearly he had championed the actor's talent.

But in 2019, Jenner's ex-wife, Melissa Benoit, said she had been the victim of domestic violence. She said she tore her iris after a phone was thrown at her during a relationship where she was slapped, punched and choked. In 2020, Jenner admitted to causing her eye injury, but claims the abuse was mutual.

In 2023, it was announced that Mescal would replace Jenner. Did Linklater find Jenner's work in ''Merrily'' wanting or did they want to avoid bad press?

Or did ''Merrily'' want to take advantage of a now-hotter star, Mescal, coming off of his success in ''Aftersun'' and ''Normal People''? Who knows?!
