It looks like Dainty June (biracial) starts on the chitlin circuit with black newsboys. The newsboys are specified on the call sheet as black but the farm boys with the older Dainty June are white including Tulsa. So June passes as white crossing over into white vaudeville with white farm boys and a white Tulsa. Herbie as was said is specified as white and the strippers can be any ethnicity. I wonder if its a black burlesque theater - did they have those back then? Because the Toreadorables and Agnes are specified as white. Is the African-American Louise trying to make herself up as Latina? I don't think a black stripper would have attained the mainstream fame and fortune of Gypsy Rose Lee circa 1935-1945.

Just a note - back in the early twenties and early thirties was vaudeville strictly segregated? Other than Mama Rose and Louise and Baby June who are either African-American or biracial - the rest of Mama Rose's act are white and so is Herbie. I think there were very few acts with black and white performers working together? Bert Williams got into the Ziegfeld Follies (a revue) on Broadway but otherwise weren't the few black acts relegated to performing alone and not in conjunction with white performers? Also, Louise being obviously black would mean that she wouldn't be allowed to perform with her biracial sister who can pass? Or is that why Louise is later relegated to playing the cow disguised in an animal suit?

Also, a note about Herbie. Jack Klugman was fairly young at 37 when he created the role. The cast breakdown specifies Herbie as between 40 and 50 years old. Regarding good-looking Herbies: I remember John Dossett being a rather handsome Herbie with Bernadette Peters. So was Boyd Gaines with Patti LuPone. I was thinking Michael McKean would be perfect but he's 76 years old. Several of the Herbie suggestions are actors well over 50 and in several cases well over 60. The character can be younger than Mama Rose but not by much.
