Mama Rose is anything but warm or empathetic. She is a great character though, because despite her single-mindedness, the audience feels poignance because she never made it the way her daughter did. Also Mama Rose is probably the most ferocious female part since Lady Macbeth. No wonder actresses covet the role and then those songs. Merman made Everything’s Coming up Roses her signature song.
