Reidel skewered her without relent in the press for missing many performances. She was very sick — one performance I saw, started with a very weak voice and her understudy took over Act 2. She was definitely trying and knew how much was riding in her, but her physical condition was just too much.
He was merciless, gleefully suggesting Peters’ face on milk cartons. He was very cruel and wouldn’t stop — even when it was clear she was ill. I think he really turned the tide against her. She absolutely should have won. Her Tony Awards performance of Rose’s Turn remains spectacular.
The original HAIRSPRAY remains one of the my all time favorites, but Marissa did NOTHING special in the role.
So, once again and for good measure, if Reidel weren’t already a despicable piece of shit, I’d wish that for him. |
