Interesting that the article states that Bailey stayed with the show until it closed in 1970, when, in truth, she was succeeded by Phyllis Diller and then Ethel Merman, who actually closed it in 1970 in her final Broadway appearance.

Not surprising that they may have overlooked Diller's brief tenure in the show, but I'm surprised no one at LIFE would have known about Merman finally taking on the role. Given that it was both her return to Broadway after the better part of a decade and the first time she ever took on a role as a replacement, I imagine that there would have been a lot of publicity at the time for her engagement. Of course, no one knew that it was going to be Merman's last Broadway role, but there might have been a sense, given her age and that Broadway was moving away from her kind of roles and shows, that it being her swan song was likely.
