Sorry to hear this came off so badly on TV. It reminds me of the PBS filming of "Memphis" which I found unwatchable. Montego Glover seemed to be reciting her lines to someone in the rear balcony and calculatedly posing rather than behaving. Chad Kimball seemed to be a gibbering, quivering ball of simpleton tics. Both were mannered and playing to the rear balcony.

Also the filming of "Gypsy" in London with Imelda Staunton was another case of an acclaimed performance not translating well to television.

I haven't seen the "Purlie Victorious!" filming as of yet but I did see it in the theater live. That kind of high energy, broad performing worked because some of the background is vaudeville and farce - so the exaggerated style worked well. It was highly theatrical in concept and execution. Also, the lead character is a preacher and there is a sense that he is always in the pulpit performing for a congregation - loud and public style speechifying.

I think the best idea would be to do them like the NBC Live! musicals and take these shows and transfer them to a studio with multiple camera setup and rethink them for TV. BTW: the performers who came off best in the NBC Live! shows were performers with ample television/movie and Broadway experience. Lovely Kelli O'Hara in "Peter Pan", Audra MacDonald as the Abbess and Laura Benanti as Elsa in "The Sound of Music" and there are others. The "Hairspay" cast used a lot of Broadway people who also do film work - Martin Short, Jennifer Hudson, Kristin Chenoweth and Andrea Martin. They hit the right balance while being able to refocus their performance energy for the camera's intimacy.

On the other hand "Purlie Victorious" is a broad, farcical comedy and probably needs the energy of a live audience for the actors to work off of.
