I agree with every word of your post. Finally seeing a stage performance of Ossie Davis' masterwork Purlie Victorious was easily one of the highlights of the 36 shows I saw in New York this season. Leslie Odom Jr.'s performance really gives Purlie a needed "edge" that makes the show so memorable and enjoyable. As a young teen I was a big fan of the '63 film with Davis, Dee, and that incredible supporting cast of Cambridge, Richards, Alda, and Booke.

For the record, Dee and Melba Moore also played the role of Lutiebelle as guileless, naive, and innocent. I can't imagine it working any other way.

I'm a little shocked at such a negative reaction here on ATC. I suppose it's just not a show for everyone.
