Also, they should cast a real pop star to play Birdie.

I was also confused by Sykes' musical take on "A Lot Of Livin' To Do" on the rehearsal video I saw. Sounds like they're allowing him to style the song as he wishes - but the result takes us out of the show's period. Now, "Livin'" is not a real rock and roll song like Birdie's other 2 big numbers (to me it always sounds like something out of Vegas in the 50's), but it still has a period feel as written. Are Sykes' other songs going to be equally period-free?

The show's era is pretty clear - anchored by the draft and the advent of rock and roll and the resulting generation gap as huge main historical plot points. If you screw around with that, the show doesn't make sense. The music deftly reflects all aspects of the era.
